Sadly heart disease is still the number one killer of men and women each year, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. So the more knowledge we can provide to people about how to take better care of themselves and their families, the more lives we hope to save and improve.

LABVANTAGE has long been a supporter of the American Heart Association’s efforts to fund research, lobby for advocacy, and educate local communities in the fight against heart disease. In recent years, our own staff have been touched many times by the randomness of this disease. Several team members have suffered heart attacks, we have lost too many loved ones to count, and even one of our own employees lost their life to it. Whenever we can, we make an effort as a company to provide programs to our team that will help them live happier, healthier, longer lives. From courses on nutrition, to yoga, to a lunchtime walking group, we continue to strive for a balance between work-life and optimal health.

On Thursday, 05-April we invited Michael Smith, from the American Heart Association ECC (Emergency Cardiovascular Care) team to conduct a CPR training class. He brought a CPR Anytime Kit for each participant to use during the class which we then got to keep and take home, so that we could also help train our family and friends. We had an amazing turnout, with 20 employees in attendance. Along with learning valuable life-saving techniques for performing CPR, we also learned several reasons why it is so critical for as many people as possible to be trained in CPR:

  • Almost 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home; many are witnessed by a family member.
  • Each year, EMS treats nearly 300,000 victims of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Unless CPR and defibrillation are provided within minutes of collapse, few attempts at resuscitation are successful.
  • More than 92 percent of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital will die.

We were glad to see such enthusiastic participation at this event and look forward to future opportunities to promote health and well-being for all of our employees!
