SAPPHIRE has as its foundation a thin-client architecture, developed to provide SAPPHIRE users, both internal and external to the laboratory, with the ability to access their SAPPHIRE LIMS from virtually any Internet or Intranet access device.

SAPPHIRE leverages standard corporate infrastructures by enabling the open flow of information between internal and external systems, and by enabling the integration of 3rd party applications.

SAPPHIRE supports access from any Internet/Intranet devices running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0+ on a PC-based operating system. This results in a zero-installation, zero-footprint browser/server architecture, which greatly simplifies enterprise application deployment and administration with no plug-ins, downloads or applets required on the end-user client.

The following figure shows SAPPHIRE’s scalable, high-performance environment and how the various layers interact and connect seamlessly. This environment allows all servers to equally perform in a cluster, with the load balanced across each server with server-specific load balancing algorithms. In addition, SAPPHIRE supports the following application servers:

IBM WebSphere®
BEA WebLogic®
Sybase® EA Server
