| NextGen Sciences Ltd. and LabVantage Solutions Inc to create a Complete Discovery Lifecycle Information Management System |

Boston, MA August 5th, 2002. NextGen Sciences Ltd. (Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom), a company specialising in new platform technologies for protein target discovery and validation and LabVantage Solutions Inc (Bridgewater, New Jersey, USA), a leading provider of Discovery Lifecycle LIMS and virtual laboratory solutions, announced today at the IBC Drug Discovery Technology Conference, in Boston MA, the formation of a development and marketing agreement.
The two companies aim to combine their expertise and Intellectual Property to create a complete Discovery Lifecycle Information Management System for gene cloning and protein expression by integrating LabVantage Sapphire™ Informatics into NextGen Sciences' proprietary technology platforms.
NextGen Sciences is developing three platforms for protein target discovery and target validation. The first of these platforms is its Protein Biochip technology which includes: new protein biochips for breast cancer, a suite of novel tools for making protein biochips and the ProteinArray Workstation, developed in collaboration with, and now marketed by, PerkinElmer Life Sciences.
"The next two technology platforms in development at NextGen Sciences represent a major leap forward for protein research (proteomics)," explained Dr Kevin Auton, CEO, NextGen Sciences Ltd. "These new platforms complement our protein biochip technology. Our second platform identifies new protein targets at a speed and resolution that has not been possible in the past. This ProteinDiscovery System will be commercially available by early 2003. The third platform is our Expression Factory, available mid 2003. This combines a suite of novel biochemical tools with a completely integrated robotics system to express hundreds of proteins in parallel and with complete automation. Both platforms require extensive data handling, tracking and scheduling to manage these processes. Our partnership with LabVantage and access to the powerful Sapphire™ information system is a vital aspect of both platform technologies.
Through the partnership, NextGen Sciences and LabVantage will co-develop an Information Management System for protein expression and protein biochip production. This new system will be marketed directly by NextGen Sciences as a stand-alone informatics suite or as part of its ProteinDiscovery System and the Expression Factory for laboratories that need to increase the rate at which they can discover and express new proteins of interest.
