LabVantage Continues to Expand Leadership Position for Growing CRO Market
New Orleans, Louisiana March 4, 2001. Key Customer Wins Further Validate Browser-Based Virtual Laboratory Position

LabVantage Solutions, Inc., a leading provider of laboratory information solutions, announced today at Pittcon, that it continues to expand its leadership position for the growing Contract Research Organization (CRO) market.

According to the latest survey conducted by the Pharmaceutical Outsourcing Management Association, outsourcing spending by pharmaceutical companies increased significantly in 2000 from 1999. Ninety percent of the survey's participants reported increased outsourcing spending in 2000 and expect spending on CROs to continue to grow in 2001. As the CRO market has grown, they have begun to see a much more focused approach to solution offerings. The major success factor for solution providers is based on providing more market-specific, high-performance technology with an expandable capacity and quicker delivery speed. The survey also indicated that CROs need tools to help them integrate their data to speed their processes and to connect with their customers outside of the laboratory.

Customer Service Takes Center Stage. Two of the most important strengths a CRO laboratory must have today are the ability to provide superior customer service and to rapidly reconfigure solutions to meet the needs of a variety of customers. These capabilities are forcing many of today's traditional labs to come under management scrutiny and adding pressure to improve their service levels. Providing superior customer service is the cornerstone of today's virtual laboratory.

"Contract research organizations are a vital resource in an industry that continues to look for ways to improve customer service capabilities, while reducing operating costs," said Scott Deutsch, vice president, global marketing for LabVantage. "Traditional labs need to look at their ability to deliver information to their virtual customers via their LAN, WAN or the Internet without all of the costs and overhead associated with older client/server environments."

LabVantage Recent Successes Pertaining to This Trend LabVantage is helping a number of CROs build their virtual laboratory, including:

University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) - Canada's largest provider of analytical research, regulatory testing, consultative services and comprehensive laboratory diagnostic services in support of agriculture and food excellence.
CEDRA (Austin, Texas) - a provider of excellence in biotechnical services for the pharmaceutical industry and the federal government.

LabVantage Sapphire™ enables the CRO market to meet its aggressive business and technology requirements by equipping laboratories with a scalable, easy-to-configure automation solution. The solution's ability to seamlessly connect various customers gives CRO laboratories a competitive advantage and therefore helps them to provide superior customer service.

Architecture and Usability Key Elements. Sapphire™ 3.0 is a 100-percent browser-based solution that does not require Citrix servers or any plug-ins or applets to be downloaded to provide browser-based functionality. Sapphire™ is a browser/server solution that has a complete three-tiered architecture and a scalable application server layer.

Sapphire™ 3.0 was designed with two key design criteria: first, access to functionality must be self-evident, and second, the user must be able to execute a desired task with a single click. No more than two clicks would be acceptable. LabVantage's mission was to stop the "menu-tree madness" that exists with mature client/server applications. For today's leading CROs, it is critical that training and education costs be kept to a minimum.
